For some time it has been the earnest desire of Mr. Daniel F. Gardner, formerly of East Machias, that the family records of the descendants of Ebenezer Gardner, of Machias, might be compiled and preserved in some convenient form during the life- time of the older members of the family.
At his recjuest, therefore, this brief sketch has been undertaken.
The work has been hampered somewhat by the author’s inability to personally examine many of the records and to con- verse with the people themselves. This has probably caused many errors and omissions, of the existence of which I would gladly be informed.
Doubtless many have been bored with my correspondence, but I wish to express my sincere thanks to all who have so kindly assisted me.
If this little pamphlet shall prove of interest or value to any- one hereafter, I shall feel well repaid.
I am indebted to Frank A. Gardner, M. D., who is preparing “a History of the Descendants of Mr. Thomas Gardner of Salem, Mass.,” for many facts connected with the brief account of the ancestors of Ebenezer Gardner following.

EARLY HISTORY OF THE FAMILY.
Mr. Thomas Gardner set sail from Weymouth, Dorset county, England, in 1623, with fourteen others, in a small vessel fitted out by “The Western Adventurers,” and landed at Cape Ann. He was “to oversee the planting” in the colony, nor this rea- son he has sometimes been called the “first governor of Massa- chusetts.” In 1626, those who remained of the colony moved to Nahum Keike, which they afterwards called Salem, (it is said by Thomas.) Of his life previous to leaving England, nothing is known, but this name is recorded in Dorsetshire for three centuries previous to 1600. Lie was a member of the General Court in 1637, was very prominent in town affairs throughout his life, and had extensive grants of land in Salem and Danvers, among others, a grant of 100 acres in 1836.
He married Margaret Frier, in England, and after her death, the widow Damaris Shattuck, who died September 28, 1674. He died October 29, 1674, leaving nine children.

From these children have sprung a numerous progeny scat- tered far and wide over our country and including many prom- inent citizens.
Thomas^ remained at Salem and held many important town offices.
George^ married a daughter of Rev. Samuel Stone, one of the leading clergymen of his day, and became a judge during the

time of the witchcraft delusions at Salem and vicinity. One of his daughters married John Hathorne, ^Yho was also a judge presiding at several witchcraft trials.
A son, SamueP, was a captain in the Indian wars, and his son John^ was captain of the Salem company in the Indian fight at fiaverhill.
John’s'* youngest daughter was the mother of Judge Holton, at one time president of Congress, while his eldest son John^ married the widow of Gen. Putnam’s brother and was captain of a troop of horse.
This John’s grandson, SamueP owned for years the famous Summer street estate in Boston, formerly the home of the Vas- sals and Hubbards, and one of the finest old time mansions with spacious well kept grounds, in the State.
Richard^ and John^ .moved to Nantucket, where their descend- ants intermarried with the Starbucks, Coffins, Maceys and other prominent families, and their descendants are among the most prosperous people of Southern Massachusetts.
From this branch of the familv came the Gardner families at Gardner’s lake. .
John^ was captain of militia and judge of probate, and held many civil and military commissions.
MAINE BRANCH.
Samuel Gardner- {son of Thomas^) was born about 1627. Fie erected a corn mill, November 9, 1659. He was a merchant in Salem, and also a member of the board of selectmen who received deed of land where city of Salem now stands, from the Indians in 1686. He was a member of the general court in 1681-2-5. He married Mary White, daughter of Elizabeth (Flerbert) and John White, and granddaughter of John Herbert, mayor of Northampton, England, and Susanna. After her death he mar- ried Mrs, Elizabeth Paine, August 2, 1680. He died October^ 1689, leaving eight children.

Abel Gardnerb {son of Samuel-,) horn September 1,1673,, a merchant at Salem village. He married Sarah Porter, born August 24, 1675, daughter of Israel and Elizabeth Porter. She died September 24, 1728. Israel Porter was born February 12, 1643, married, November 20, 1672, the daughter of Major and Ann Hathorne, a direct ancestor of Nathaniel Hawthorne. He was the son of John and Mary Porter, who came from Eng- land in 1635. He was the largest land owner in Salem. He died September 6, 1676. Abel Gardner died November 10, 1739, leaving eight children.

Thomas Gardner^ {son of AbeP) was baptized October 14, 1705. Married, February 13, 1728, Eunice Waters, baptized August 18, 1706, daughter of John and Mary Waters. John, born July 4, 1665, was son of John Waters, (born November 27, 1640, who was son of Richard and Joyce Waters and Sarah Tompkins, born February i, 1642, daughter of John Tompkins. Richard was son of James Waters of London.) Thomas Gard- ner died about February, 1753, leaving six children.

First of the Family in Maine.
Ebenezer Gardner'^ {son of Thomas*) baptized Septem- ber 4, 1737, was a potter by trade and resided in Roxbury. He sold his share of his father’s property in 1763 and received a grant of land in Auk-paque, Cumberland county. Nova Scotia, from which the Acadians had been expelled. On the breaking out of the Revolutionary War he remained loyal to the colonies and was a member of the committee of safety, who went to

Boston to urge an energetic campaign to protect the faithful in ' the Provinces. For this reason shortly after his return he was obliged to flee the country and his wife and family followed^ suffering fearful exposure and danger, to Machiasport in 1776. For his patriotic services he received a grant of one thousand acres of land in 1785, near Bangor, but preferred to remain at iMachias, where he built a home below “The Falls.” He mar- ried Damaris, baptized September 4, 1747, died February 5, 1837,
• aged ninety-two years, daughter of Nathan and Susanna Merrill of Haverhill. He died November 21, 1832, aged ninety-seven years. He left nine children.

Aaron died shortly after, and she married July 17, 1796, Marshal Thaxter, son of IMajor Samuel and Abigail (Smith) Thaxter, born in Hingham, Mass., March 14, 1760, died February 28, 1835. He was a tanne^ by trade and his tannery was for years one of the landmarks ( IMachias. His business is still carried on by his children. Susanna and .A^^nliad ten children. She died April 9, 1843.

were married in 1749 and had twelve children. Hannah died September i, 1858. She had no children but brought up Daniel /fy F RurDHannah, children- o# Thomac*^. Aunt and Uncle Foster are kindly remembered by all the numerous nephews and nieces.
He was a lumberman and farmer and in 1800 built the house in East Machias occupied for many years after his decease by Daniel F. Gardner'.
4. EBENEZER GARDNER®, {son of Ebenczcf\) born January 31, 1776. Married June 21, 1803, Sally Albee ; she was daughter of Wm. and Ellen (Dillway) Albee, born November 12, 1783, died August 25, 1875, aged 92. He was a farmer and lived at Hadley’s Lake. Died February 5, 1859. They had twelve children.

Lincoln, born February 17, 1794, and Leah Leighton, born Feb- ruary 7, 1803, of Dennysville. William was son of Matthew Lincoln of Sidney, Me., a native of Hingham, Mass. I-^eah was daughter of Samuel Leighton, whose wife was a Hersey. Mr. Gardner married a second time, October 8, 1881, Lucy Keller, a native of East Machias, widow of Ambrose Brown of Brooklyn, N. Y. She died November 19, 1895, aged 64.

They had eight children. After her death he married 2nd, February 14, 1830, Mary Palmer, daughter of Daniel and Polly Palmer and granddaughter of Wm. Albee. She was born March 3, 1810, and died August 23, 1833. They had two children. After her death he married 3rd, 1836, Lavi- nia Foster, daughter of Daniel Hoyt. She died September 22, 1879. Fie lived for a number of years at Machiasport, where he was for a long time deacon of the Congregational church and prominent in church affairs. In 1852 he moved to Machias where he died October 9, 1863. Ten children.
